Summary
This is the most recent publication of provisional monthly HES (Hospital Episode Statistics) data for NHS Hospitals in England and activity performed in the Independent sector in England commissioned by English NHS.
A note on the publication dates for 2011/12: Provisional monthly HES publication dates will be based on the deadline for NHS trusts and similar health provider organisations to send data to the Secondary Uses Service. Normally, the publication will be 35 working days later than the deadline, unless the 8th working day is a Friday (in which case add 1 day) or the 35th working day is a Monday or the first day after a bank holiday (in which case add 1 day). Both of these exceptions can occur, so we always publish 35, 36, or 37 working days after the NHS submission date.
Highlights
Monthly HES data for Inpatients
In the year from August 2010 to July 2011 there were:
• 17.2 million finished consultant episodes (FCEs)², 58.7% (10.1 million) of which included at least one procedure or intervention, and 5.7 million of which were day cases.
• 14.8 million finished admission episodes (FAEs)³, of which 5.3 million were emergency admissions.
Monthly HES - Inpatient Clinical coding coverage
The shortfall between the most recent month's data is more pronounced when considering clinical (procedures and diagnoses) coverage. 2.7% more procedures and 5.3% more diagnoses were coded in the HES data submitted to SUS by 23/9/2011 (Month 5) - extract used for this publication, compared to the HES data submitted to SUS by 22/8/2011 (Month 4) used for 12th October 2011 publication. We accordingly recommend extra caution using clinical codes for the most recent months data.
Monthly HES for Outpatients
In the year from August 2010 to July 2011 there were:
• 87.6 million outpatient appointments made, with 69.9 million (79.8%) of these attended by the patient.
• 6.7 million outpatient appointments not attended by the patient, representing 7.7% of all appointments. Provisional Monthly HES data for Accident and Emergency (Experimental Data)
In the year from August 2010 to July 2011 there were:
• 16.4 million A&E attendances³ recorded in A&E HES. Of these 3.6 million (21.9%) resulted in admission to hospital for inpatient treatment, 3.1 million (19.0%) resulted in a GP follow up, and 6.3 million (38.4%) were discharged with no follow up.
Provisional Monthly HES topic of interest: Asthma
In the period from August 2010 to July 2011:
• There were 68,532 finished admission episodes (FAEs) with the primary diagnosis of asthma, compared with 67,382 between August 2009 and July 2010, representing a 1.7% increase.
• Females accounted for 56.9% of episodes (39,004), while males accounted for 43.1% (29,525) FAEs.
• Those aged 16 and under incurred the highest number of admission episodes.
